Casualty Extract
Camera techniques in the extract:
-Long shot
-Medium shot
-Close up
-Selective focus
-Tilt
-Handheld
-High angle
-Low angle
-Tracking
In the extract there was many close up shots, but one in particular was when a man was sat in an ambulance with blood and gas masks on. I think that a close up shot was used at this point to show more detail, and also the characters emotions and feelings. It also lets the audience focus on just the one character and what is happening to him.
The was also a handheld movement in the extract when a man falls down a flight of stairs. I think that this type of movement was used to create realism in the part of the extract, and also to shock the audience, and to create anxiousness and urgency.
A high angle shot was used when the man was laying on the floor after collapsing. This type of shot was used to show that the character is now vulnerable, and it also makes the accident seen more dramatic.

Hannah and Nellie Soundscape
For our soundscape we used the narrative of an attacker meeting its victim, we used different sounds/soundtracks to produce this. We were trying to build up tension in the beginning/middle of the sound clip with fast, jittery sounds like static. This really helped to build up tension, we also overlaid some tracks to create different and more atomospheric sound. We then tried to relieve the tension but in a sinister and scary way, we did this by using a piano track with an eerie background noise. This helped us feel relieved but also kept us on the edge, like it would in a movie sequence.
Casualty- Camera work and meaning
Write down all the camera techniques of which you recognise in the extract, remember shot, angle, movement, position.
- close up
- medium shot
- extreme close up
- pan
- reaction shot
- tilt
- ariel shot
- long shot
- two shot
- over head shot
- over shoulder shot
- birds eye view shot
- Tracking
- Crane
- point of view (POV)
- Handheld
- Pan- this is used to look from one side of the scene to the other in one movement. this was used when the men were shopping. by using a pan movement makes the audience get a better understanding of the surroundings within the scene.
- Two Shot this is used for two characters in the same shot, there could be a relationship between these two characters. for example: a two shot was used with the two men in the Cafe as they were talking over the table to each other.
- Over head shot is used when the camera is positioned above the character, action or object being filmed. this takes place a couple of times, one example would be when 'eli' falls down the stairs. We see the camera is positioned above him.

Camera And Meaning Task- Casualty!
Write down all the camera techniques of which you recognise in the extract, remember shot, angle, movement, position.
- Over Shoulder shot
- Twos Shot
- Birds Eye View Shot
- Long Shot
- Medium Shot
- Close Up
- Tracking
- Crane
- Selective Focus
- Handheld
- Over the Shoulder Shot was used alot, especially in the beginning when the two characters were in a clothes shop and he was looking at himself in the mirror- it was iver his shoulder. This helps us see it from his point of view without being from his POV as we get to see what he is seeing in the mirror, I think by seeing what he sees and knowing his opinion we can sympathize with him or be happy for him depending on the characters emotion!
- Two Shot was used with the two men in the Cafe as they were talking over the table to each other. This shows that they have some sort of relationship with each other and it makes us feel like an on-looker to what is happening!
- Handheld Camerawork was used when "Eli" was being surrounded by a group of drunk women, i think this was used to show that it was causing him some panic although he seemed calm, which makes us think that something bad will happen, which at the end of that sequence, does happen!
Sound TV Drama
The Goodfellas Sound and Mood Effects:
Identify as many examples of diegetic and non-diegetic sound as you can:
Diegetic: The car engine in the opening scene, someone banging from the inside of the boot, gun shots and windows smashing.
Non-diegetic: Opening sequence music, voiceover throughout the opening scene
From the dialouge what do we know about the narrative (Storyline)?
From what we have heard from th characters we can pick up that the narrative will be about gangsters, as we hear the main chaaracter say "I always wanted to be a gangster" which makes it quite obvious. we can also tell from the way they talk that it is very "gangster-ish"
How important is the use of music?

How important is the use of music?
I think in this Movie and the Opening Sequence the use of music is very important because it helps us define what time period the movie is from, we know this because of the type of music that was playing (Swing Music). The music was parallel to what was happening on-screen which is important because it helps the audience understand more of the mood of whats happening on-screen!!
Tombraider Sound and Meaning

We are seeing Lara Croft fighting a robotic creature.
What kind of story is being told? The story being told is of a woman that is raiding tombs
What would you think about or how would you feel about this if all you saw was the visual image with no sound?
It wouldn't create the same intense atmosphere whilst watching it without any sound. It is also boring with out the sound and it is not as easy to understand what is happening.
How would you describe the sound?
How would you describe the music? speed rythm etc
Fast tempo, quick beat. The music runs parallel with the scene itself.
Can you identify the different diegetic and non diegetic sounds?
Diegetic sounds were footsteps, dialogue. Non diegetic sounds were the soundtrack music, the gun shots and the robot sounds.

It gives a clearer indication of what's happening in the scene. Giving the audience a more in depth realism.
What is the overall effect?
Does the sound refelct what is being shown on screen?
Yes.
When the music is combined with the visuals how does it make you feel?
Intense, it gives the audience a sense of awareness and a more involved feeling towards the characters and scenes.
SOUND AND MEANING: TOMB RAIDER!!
WHAT IS HAPPENING VISUALLY?
What are you seeing?
Lara Croft is fighting againest a robot to collect a talismen. She is shooting her pistols to try and kill it but doesnt realise the bullets are doing very little damage. She shoots a rope to release it and then swings across the room shooting a pillar to make it fall and crush the robot. After she thinks it is dead, she walks along the fallen pillar and then the robot comes back to life making her backflip off. She kills the robot by pulling the wires out of its back. She goes to collect the talisman and another robot appears. After she has deactivated it she takes it back to the man who built the robot as this was only a task to help her practice for such an event.
What kind of story is being told?
An action movie, containing a women who is trying to collect a certain piece of treasure.
What would you think about or how would you feel about this if all you saw was the visual image with no sound?
It wouldn't be the same or have the same effects. The audience would not feel as tensed or interested if it was all a visual image.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE SOUND?
How would you describe the music? speed rhythm etc
The more action movements that Lara does, the more dramatic the music is. This brings suspense to the audience as to whether or not she will survive.
Can you identify the different diegetic and non diegetic sounds?
The music that is playing whilst she is fighting the robot is non-diagetic, and the music she is playing when she defeats the robot is diagetic.
In what way does the sound add to the narrative?
It makes the storyline more exciting and it draws your attention to it, making it more entertaining for the audience to watch. Sound also helps you remember a bit more of the movie, for example, you remember the scene when she defeated the robot, she played music, and because it was contrapental, that helps you remember it more as well.
WHAT IS THE OVERALL EFFECT?
Does the sound reflect what is being shown on screen?
Yes it does. It does this by adding excitement to the scene, also dramatises and exaggerates the sequence.
When the music is combined with the visuals how does it make you feel?
It makes us as the audience feel more tense because it gives us a reaction. The music is well time with the sequences she is doing which makes us want to watch more, because the more timed the actions are with the music the more of an effect it gives us.
FORMULA:
What is happening visually + how would you describe the sound = what is the overall effect

lauren stokes
Our narrative was attacker meets victim, we used different sounds to produce this, these were intense, thrilling and spooky sounds which you would hear watching a thriller or Horror movie. We used sounds that sounded like wind, ticking, door knocking, violin and string sounds, and also we used gloomy music in the backgroud of part on the sounds.
Sound In Tv Drama- Homework
What is happening Visually?
- A girl who looks like shes on a mission is a cave area is armed with guns, trying to receive something on top of this rock. As she sneakly walks to retreive this object a msive robot makes this very difficult by trying to catch her. We see a close up on the robots mind saying 'kill lara croft'. If i was to see this clip with no sound i think it would become very boring, as there no exiting sounds to go with all the fighting thats happening.
How would you describe the sound?
- The music going with this clip is always upbeat either a slow pop or a peice of music made to go with a secret mission. The pace of that is slow beats. The Diagetic sounds were the gunshots and the robot noises. The non-diagetic sounds were her footsteps and her heavy breathing.
What is the overall effect?
- The sound reflects well with what is being shown on the screen, as the whole atmosphere is fast, eager, quick movements. So the music is fast drum and bass and slow. When the music is combined it makes the whole secret mission/agent experience fit together it shows build ups. There parell sounds, the music is almost incedental as whilst watching the programme you dont listen to the music you jsut almost know its supposed to be there as it fits so well.

Then finally, add your analysis by explaing why you think that camera technique has been used in that particular way.
-Two tone shot- This is used when there are 2 characters in the same shot, this could suggest that there maybe the posibility of a relationship between the 2 characters involved. There is an example of this when the 2 men are looking through the shop window at the clothes.
-Handheld-This is mainly used in horror movies, used to show when a character is running away. It shows realism in the programme and makes the audience feel the experiance and feel more involved. This can be used when Eli is talking to the group of drunken women, because the way the camera shakes can be used to show the drunken womens state of mind.
-Pan-This is used to look from one side of the scene to the other in a complete shot. This can be used when someone is running or to just let the audience get a better understanding of the scenery around them.

FIRST SCREENING!
What is the atmosphere of the sequence, how does it make you feel and who do you identify with, if anyone?
At the beginning of the episode the beginning was very dramatic when he fired the gun at the vase making the audience want to watch more and feel very tense at the same time, knowing that something bad could happen. After Maxine had been shot, characters started to get upset which made the audience feel sympathetic towards the characters. Also at the end of the clip, where her mother is crying, it makes the audience feel sad but angry at the boy who shot her.
SECOND SCREENING!
List and describe shot types, angle, movement and distance?

-Distance:
When the camera is at a long shot, for example when the boy is jumping over the fences to run away, it makes us as the audience feel like we should be running after him to stop him. Also it makes us feel like he didnt hae any intention of shooting maxine, or he did, he just regreted it afterwards. The long shot was a good camera choice for this event however I would have personally used a tracking shot but with the full intention of the camera looking like it is running with him (camera in hand)

How and why does the camerawork (angles) make us feel and why?
Earl (male) had low angle shots throughtout the sequence to represent that he is the superior character. The only time he had a high angle shot was when the police surrounded him, which shows the audience that the police and now more superior than him. Maxine (female) had high angle shots throughtout to show that she is vulnerable and to show the audience that she was smaller than Earl. Another example of Earl being the superior character is when he throws Janice (Maxines friend) onto the sofa and points a gun at her. This is filmed with a high angle shot so that we can see that she is scared and vulnerable of Earl.

Camerawork Analysis (WATERLOO ROAD)
The atomsphere that Waterloo Road has is very sad, depressing and gloomy which makes the audience feel empathy towards the female character (Maxine). As an audience member you get pulled into the episode which makes you begin to feel the feelings that the characters are feeling e.g Steph Crying.
Shot Types used:
Aerial Shot- this is an overhead position which is an establishing shot. For Example in the car park you see everything that is happening. This gives the viewers a clear illustration of what is happening in the frame.
Angles used:
High Angle- this is used on the more vunerable characters e.g when Maxine was dying.
Low Angle- this is used on the more dominant characters to show power e.g Male character.
Distance, having the camera close up to the character makes the audience feel like they are in the room with them and feel more involved, which makes them feel the feelings and emotions of all the characters in the room.
Angle, the high angles makes you feel empathy. The boy had all the low angle shots because it portrays dominance. When the female character (Maxine) is dying there was high shots to show she was vulnerable.

Representation- Focus on Gender
Desperate Housewives Opening Sequence- Gender Representation
In the opening sequence of Desperate Housewives there are a lot of traditional representations of women roles, for example in the second frame we see an egypitian women drowning in the responsabilties of looking after her children, showing the typical view of what a women should be (A Mother). In another shot we see the man being won over by a newer, younger women and his older wife is being "canned" away literally, this showing us that when a man finds something newer and better the older thing is forgotton which shows that men think they can treat women how they like.
We also see the shift in representation of women in this opening sequence. We see at the end a woman in tears we then see her becoming strong and standing up to the man by punching him. This represents the power that women have nowdays but rarely feel like they can show it!

Gender Representation
The Doctor Who clip showed the traditional views on how men inferior to women. This was because the camera shots used to portray the male were low shots, therefore this indicates that he is dominate. However the female character was illustrated with high shots, this shows that she is vulnerable compared to the man. This indicates a very stereotypical representation between both genders.
The desperate house wives introduction is very traditional as it shows that she is cleaning up after the men, she was pregnant and she was shopping for groceries to feed her family.

Gender Representation
In the beginning, you see Adam and Eve together and then Adam gets squashed by an apple. Then later on you see the man eat a banana, throw it away and the women who is pregnant comes and cleans it up straight away. Then another man finds a young woman who he is more attracted to then his wife so he cans his wife over and marrys the young more attractive woman. This title screen shows the history of men over the years of how superior men are.
The doctor has always been a man never a woman. At the beginning the villian tells the woman to bow down and listen to what he has to say, but she disobeys and makes him listen to what she has say. She then turns out to be the heroin of the scene. The women at the side of the scene are the maids and you see that there is no men there, but the only man there is the bodyguard protecting the villian.
Gender Representation
Desperate housewives introduction

In this short clip it showed us how gender is represented in this TV drama. It showed us the traditional women, for example you can see a woman with lots of children sprouting from her, showing us the tradition of women having lots of children. It then shows us a man taking a bite from a banana, and then throwing it on the floor. Instead of cleaning it up himself, it shows a pregnant housewife sweeping up the mess for him. Traditional media has again showed us the roles that are expected of women in the past. It then shows a man with two women, one old and got rid of by the man and chucked into a can, whilst another appears who is young, pretty and new. This shows how women used to be 'owned' by men, and treated with disrespect. It then shows a women with her hands full of food shopping, showing us the chores women were expected to carry out, for example doing the shopping and housework. This whole clip shows us the traditional roles of men and women, and how men were superior to women.

Gender Representation
Desperate Housewives introduction:
Within the opening sequence of this TV drama we see that traditional representations were still present as women has the 'house wive' role. Examples of this were that women were cleaning up after their husbands as men seemed to still have the superior role. we see within the opening sequence that women still carried on with chores whilst pregnant. Women also did all cooking and cleaning. Although within the opening sequence we see women doing 'house wive' chores we also see that women can be more dominant over the male generation, desperate housewives shows that women can have a career but also still look after their husbands and homes, and example of this is within the opening sequence when 'Adam and Eve' are shown and the apple drops upon Adam. At the end of the opening scene each main character has their own apple this is trying to convey each women can do both gender roles by working and being a typical housewife.

Media Representation: Ability / Disability
The stereotypical disabled character Andy in Little Britain:
We chose to look at this character because it is easy to point out how he is shaped like our stereotypical view of disabled people. One stereotype of this character is his voice: just because he is in a wheelchair, they have made him sound dumb, but thats like saying everyone who is in a wheelchair for paralysed limbs, for example, are all dumb. Another way the audience is lead to believe that Andy is 'dumb' is through the way his carer talks to him. He acts like Andy is a child and talks down to him patronisingly.
Another stereotypical characteristic of Andy is the way he moves. At the end of the scene below, Andy throws down the paint roller as if he has little control or care over it and doesn't realise his own strength.
These actions show our stereotypical view of disabled people: that they all have little control over themselves and are all unintelligent.

REPRESENTATION OF SEXUALITY!
WATERLOO ROAD
This clip shows a young boy who is confused with his sexuality. He thinks he has the personality of a girl but the body of a boy and this clip shows how he trys and deals with the situation after getting bullied for it.
The programme shows that his sexuality choice is wrong by showing him getting bullied for being different. However, he brings this on himself when he gets caught in the girls changing room. Although, at the end, we find that it is ok to be different in many ways and it doesnt matter what anybody else thinks of who you are, as long as you are happy with your choice of lifestyle.
The programme does conform to stereotypes because there are some people in real life who get bullied for being different. Most people don't agree with it and tend to bully those who are in a situation like this. Personally, it is quite good that they show this and how to deal with the situation because there could be many people could be confused and not sure what to do about it.

The Monarch Of The Glen.
In this extract there is different characters which represent all sorts of ages. The first characted you meet is a 16 year old girl who is streotypical teenager who lies about her age to impress a Man, she is also skipping school, and ran away to live with her uncle who is now dissapointed in her as he has found out what she has done.
Another Character seen in the extract is the uncle who looks like he is in his late fourtys working on what looked like a farm. He was looking after his niece as her father was away.
Another character looked like she was the mother of the uncle and the nan of the 16 year old girl, she seemed to me a caring women who has been stereotyped to dress in old clothes.

Representation of Gender
Wire in the Blood
In the extract, the woman is shown as a busy working woman. She always seemed on the go and stressed because of her job. We also see that she was too busy with work, and so couldnt spend time with her child, as we see that she is trying to arrange a babysitter. The woman in the extract seems to have a higher status than the man because of her job role. On the other hand, the man is shown to be not as busy with work, and so this is different to the stereotypical man. In the scenes of him looking after the child, it shows us that he is unable to make simple food, which is an example of a sterotypical man. In the scenes shown, it seems as if the woman and man have swapped the stereotypical roles, for example women are usually advertised or seen as in the kitchen cooking, looking after the children and cleaning the house, and men are usually seen to be busy with work and not the one spending most of the time with the children. This extract shows us something different, as they are both countertypes.

Genre Conventions
The inbetweeners
The sub-genre for the Inbetweeners is comedy and it is a series because each episode has an ending and each episode has a new story line.
The main characters in The Inbetweeners are the friendship group of 4 boys, with the series carrying on from when they are about 16 to 18 years old, there are also minor characters like the parents of the boys, some of the school bullies, and a brother of one of the characters.
The story lines differ throughout the series but are based on the boys lives and what they get up to from day to day, including their social life and being at school.
The most popular settings are at school, on the street or in any of their living areas.
All of the characters swear a lot in the series, they speak very informally, very sexually and about sex most of the time and are quite rude towards one another and other people in the series.
There is an opening theme tune at the beginning and end of each episode, and sometimes music throughout to match the scenes to give them more effect, usually an up beat song to match the theme tune.
