Types Of TV Drama


The Serial- continuing narrative. doesn't have an ending at each episode. Typically made in 13 episodes. Usually has a cliff hanger at the end of each episode and only achieves closure at the end of a run. Some examples are Waterloo Road, this is because it has roughly 10 episode in each run and finishes with cliffhangers.

Soap- this is an ongoing, multi-stranded televison serial drama. It has a large cast and arching storylines, it is also everlasting. An example of a soap is Easterenders, because it is ongoing and has arching storylines, it also has a very large cast. Other examples are Corination Street and Hollyoaks.

The Series- programmes with the same leads characters and each epsiode has an ending storyline. For example The Inbetweeners, this is because this tv drama has the same 4 reoccuring characters and each episode has a different storyline. Other examples of Series Dramas are Skins, The bill and Misfits.

Mini-Series- A series (a serial or series of up to about 6 episodes).

The one-off drama- Special drama thats a one off episode, and it usually lasts about 90 minutes.
