The Serial, Soaps And The Series.
The Serial is a continuing storyline over a limited number of linked programmes. It does not have an ending and usually ends on a cliff hanger. The closure would normally come at the end of the run which would be after 13 episodes. An example of a Serial would be Waterloo Road this is because each episode ends with a cliff hanger and is only on for a certain amount of episodes.
A Soap is an ongoing, multi-stranded television serial drama. Which is typically set in an enclosed location, Large cast and arching story lines. An example of a Soap is Hollyoaks this is because it has a large cast and arching storylines which are ongoing. Other Examples are Eastenders, Coronation Street and Emmerdale.
The Series is linked programmes with same lead characters where each episode is a complete new story. An example for A Series would be The inbetweeners this is because each episode they have a new storyline and is never left on a cliff hanger. Also they have the same lead character throughout. Another example would be Skins.



The Mini Series, The one-off drama and The Costume Drama
A mini series is a serial or series up to 6 episode. An example of a mini series would be Hollyoaks Later this is because it has a totally different name, it is also only on for 5 episode a year and has a totally different storyline from the soap.
A one-off drama is a special drama of only one episode. It is normally up to 90 minutes. An example would be Gavin and Staceys Christmas special which is just based on Christmas and doesn't continue from the series.
The costume Drama is typically an adaption of a classical text. Such as Jane Austens Pride and Prejudice.
