Representation- Focus on Gender

Desperate Housewives Opening Sequence- Gender Representation

In the opening sequence of Desperate Housewives there are a lot of traditional representations of women roles, for example in the second frame we see an egypitian women drowning in the responsabilties of looking after her children, showing the typical view of what a women should be (A Mother). In another shot we see the man being won over by a newer, younger women and his older wife is being "canned" away literally, this showing us that when a man finds something newer and  better the older thing is forgotton which shows that men think they can treat women how they like.

We also see the shift in representation of women in this opening sequence. We see at the end a woman in tears we then see her becoming strong and standing up to the man by punching him. This represents the power that women have nowdays but rarely feel like they can show it!
